Update 1.26: Silent Sniper

Hello all,

We have added a new content update to GunColony containing six new weapons, new modifications, balance changes, and gameplay improvements. We have also created development tools that should make future weapon updates a lot easier to implement!

NEW WEAPON: DVL-10

The DVL-10 is a Russian integrally suppressed sniper rifle firing the subsonic .40 Lobaev Whisper round capable of silently dispatching an enemy in one shot without producing any bullet tracers, enabling entirely new long-range stealth playstyles. However, it is more expensive than other sniper rifles of the same firepower and has a slow bullet velocity. It can kill in one body shot up to a significant range, but requires a headshot beyond this range. The DVL-10 is a Legendary weapon unlocked at Level 132.

NEW WEAPON: M1 CARBINE

The M1 Carbine is a WW2-era standard issue carbine of the U.S. army. While inexpensive to equip at 3 Supply Points, its small magazine and relatively inadequate stopping power by modern standards leaves much to be desired. However, it can access unique modifications to upgrade its magazine capacity and enable a full-auto firing mode at the cost of additional Supply, creating a weapon competitive with other assault rifles.

The M1 Carbine is one of the two new budget weapons in the Rifle category that we are adding this update. These weapons open up an entirely new loadout archetype to players, focused on equipping strong armor and perks at longer ranges in exchange for primary weapon efficiency.

The M1 Carbine is unlocked at Level 33 and is also available in several World War II scenarios when playing as the Allied team. The M1 Carbine also introduces a new caliber into the game, the .30 Carbine, which promises solid performance up close but has a heavy damage dropoff at range.

NEW WEAPON: SKS

The SKS is a Soviet semi-automatic rifle introduced in 1945 and was among the first weapons to adopt an intermediate cartridge, the 7.62x39mm Russian cartridge also seen on the AK-47 rifle. At a 1 Supply cost, it is the new cheapest weapon in the Rifle category. However, while it is accurate and packs a relatively powerful punch, it has a limited rate of fire and its stripper clip reloading system significantly limits reload speeds especially given its low 10-round internal magazine.

The SKS is unlocked at Level 54 and is also available on the Allied team in the AtlanticWall scenario and on the Soviet team in the Jungle scenario. Note that the “Nothing” perk is not available on this weapon due to the weapon’s already cheap base costs.

NEW WEAPON: AK 5C

The Ak 5C is a modern standard-issue assault rifle of the Swedish armed forces. It features very balanced stats and an easy-to-control recoil pattern, and fills the role of the “generic 5.56mm assault rifle” better than any existing available weapon in GunColony. Due to this, it also has a very low unlock level at Level 5. However, it is less stable than other rifles such as the SCAR-Light and AUG.

NEW WEAPON: PTRD-41

The PTRD-41 is a soviet anti-tank rifle firing a massive 14.5mm cartridge able to defeat enemies through cover. It is a single shot weapon taking a long time to reload and has a very slow handling due to its massive size, but in exchange costs a lower amount of Supply than alternatives such as the Lahti L-39. The PTRD-41 is unlocked at Level 41 and is also available in the Mannerheim Continuation Scenario on the Soviet team.

NEW SCENARIO WEAPON: NEAL SMG

The Neal SMG is a multi-barreled submachine gun designed in 1942 that never left the patent stage, but perhaps in an alternate history it could be used as a weapon of war. It is designed to fire .22 LR rounds at an incredible 3000 RPM rate of fire. It is not available in standard loadouts, but is available in Arms Race as well as the AtlanticWall scenario on the Allied team.

NEW MODIFICATIONS

Several new weapon-specific modifications have been added to the new weapons, giving players ample ways to customize them for different combat situations.

  • 20-Round Magazine (M1 Carbine): increases the M1 Carbine’s ammo capacity to 20 rounds at the cost of reload and aiming speed.
  • 30-Round Magazine (M1 Carbine): doubles the M1 Carbine’s ammo capacity to 30 rounds at the cost of 3 Supply and slower reload, aiming, and movement speed.
  • M2 Carbine Conversion (M1 Carbine): converts the M1 Carbine to the M2 Carbine, enabling a fully-automatic firing mode with a 65% boost in fire rate at the cost of 4 Supply.
  • 20-Round Detachable Magazine (SKS): doubles the SKS’s ammo capacity to 20 rounds without a reload speed penalty at the cost of 3 Supply and slower aiming and movement speed. Replaces the reload sounds and improves Reload Add Time of the weapon by 0.25s.
  • 30-Round Detachable Magazine (SKS): triples the SKS’s ammo capacity to 30 rounds with only a modest reload speed penalty at the cost of 4 Supply and slower aiming and movement speed.
  • B-32 Ammo (14.5x114mm): Decreases the PTRD’s supply cost in exchange for a slight loss in performance against enemies behind cover.
  • DGE02 APHEI Ammo (14.5x114mm): Increases damage significantly at the cost of bullet penetration.
  • MDZ HEI Ammo (14.5x114mm): A high explosive round that explodes instantly upon impact.
  • DGJ02 SLAP Ammo (14.5x114mm): A very high velocity armor piercing round that increases penetration at the cost of damage and supply cost. Also affects recoil control which has an effect on amount of flinch received when taking damage.

BALANCE CHANGES

  • SVT-40: increased supply by 1 point. Since we have added new budget rifles (the SKS and M1 Carbine), we are increasing the cost of the SVT-40 to factor in its ability to kill in 1 headshot and give more room for marksman rifles to become a viable option.
  • FAMAS: decreased supply by 2 points. The FAMAS will now have a more balanced pricing to reflect both its significant upsides and downsides compared to other assault rifles. In other words we totally came up with the idea for this buff ourselves.
  • XM8: decreased supply by 2 points. This keeps the XM8, with its higher rate of fire but relatively low stability, a more competitive and unique alternative to other assault rifles such as the new Ak 5C.
  • SIG 556: decreased supply by 1 point. The SIG 556 remains the premium option among the intermediate-cartridge semi-automatic rifles, but a reduction in cost can better justify the weapon’s better accuracy and range compared to newly-added alternatives like the M1 Carbine.
    • The SIG 556 will now have the same Supply cost to the XM8, giving players a choice between long-range and close-range performance among these scoped rifles with the same cost.
  • Classic Magazine (M4A1): backup ammo when using this magazine is now properly set to 40 rounds instead of 70 rounds. This means that the modification will no longer be much more powerful than intended.
  • Divine Perk: will no longer reduces respawn time penalty from your own Curse perk, but still reduces respawn time from the enemy Curse perk. Changed description to reflect this.

OTHER CHANGES

  • Added all new weapons to Arms Race
  • A joke version of the AA-12 has been added to the German team on AtlanticWall for a limited time
  • Added generic Plus P and JHP Ammo types to .30 Carbine, and JHP Ammo to 6.5mm Arisaka (for the Fedorov Avtomat). More love to the budget rifles!
  • Added a respawn time penalty when suiciding in PVP that increases from 1 -> 2 -> 3 -> 5 -> 10 seconds from additional suicides. This penalty is not affected by the Divine perk. We may introduce additional changes if this proves to not be enough to prevent playstyles that abuse suicides.

BUG FIXES

  • Changed the Airsoft Knife’s appearance to the regular knife to fix a missing model issue

DEVELOPMENT PROGRESS UPDATE

For this update we have finally developed a long-awaited resource pack build tool feature, which represents a significant leap forward in our ability to develop future content updates and is the first step in our ambition to develop a fully-automated and moddable content pipeline for the future.

The current version already greatly reduces the workload required to maintain our resource pack (including multiple variants for different Minecraft versions). We only need to place the needed asset files into a folder as well as add one line of configuration to specify how the weapon will be integrated to the resource pack. All repetitive tasks are then automatically performed to integrate weapon models, textures, and sound files and create 3 versions of the resource pack as output that can be uploaded directly for use in GunColony.

The resource pack build tool currently has the following features:

  • Copying of various weapon files into correct distinct folders
  • Generation of sound JSON definitions for weapon sounds as well as other miscellaneous sounds given OGG sound files
  • Generation of font atlas JSON definitions given weapon icon textures (this also means that all our new weapons no longer have a gap in the middle of the weapon icon texture)
  • Generation of weapon model JSONs to allow replacing the item models at certain durabilities with newly added weapon models
  • Automatic conversion of the new (1.21.4) item model file into older item model file format, for generation of older resource packs
  • Generation of resource pack ZIP file based on original pack files as well as new changes, as well as outputting the SHA1 hash of the output files for convenience

As we gradually move towards a fully moddable content system in the future, it is planned that a future version of the build tool will be available to the public to develop mods with a custom resource pack being generated for any Minecraft players in a lobby with the mod enabled. This would also fully take advantage of the modern Minecraft features for multiple resource packs.

As for the previously announced Discord linking feature, we wanted to prioritize weapon content but will resume development of the feature now that the content update has been released.

Hotfix 3/5/2025:

  • PTRD-41: Reduced ADS movement speed from 1.15x to 0.95x to give the weapon the mobility level expected for an anti-materiel rifle
  • PTRD-41: Cost of DGJ02 SLAP Ammo (14.5x114mm) increased from 2 to 3 Supply, because +22% bullet velocity from an already quite high baseline really is quite a big deal
  • SKS: can no longer use the regular Tula Civilian ammo to prevent people buying it on pistol rounds
  • Added a new alternative version of Tula Civilian for the SKS that replaces the supply reduction with an extra 30 backup ammo
  • M40A1: massively increased movement speed from 86% to 94% to account for the weight of the weapon
  • FMG-9: reduced swap time from 1.4s -> 1.15s
  • Pistol 20-Round Magazine (M9A1, Beretta 90two, P250, QSZ92): reduced swap time penalty from 0.15s to 0.1s but added a 10% ADS penalty (intended to be a slight nerf that creates a downside for the modification on pistol rounds)
